The Department of English of the Abeda Inamdar Senior College, Pune needs little introduction. At least in the Azam Campus. The Department is known for its vivacity and inventiveness in teaching. Made up of six very enthusiastic members, it is fast becoming the creative melting pot of the college. The Department conducts a host of creative and cultural activities throughout the year, creating an eclectic mix of academics and co-curriculars.
The English language is unarguably the lingua franca of the world today and the Department understands this well. One of the main objectives of the Department is to teach English to the students from the 23 odd institutes of Azam Campus, particularly students of the Abeda Inamdar College. But the Department does not spell just ESL. There’s more to it than that.
English Departments the world over are embracing the new roles assigned to this identity. English Studies includes not only literature and ESL, but also Literary theory, Culture studies, Pure and Applied Linguistics and so much more. And we are game for all. Maybe still in its nascent stages, but the Department makes constant efforts towards acquainting the students to these diversities and upgrading themselves in the same.
This blog is one way to enthuse some fun in the field of academics. It’s also a way to keep everyone updated on what we are up to; and also for our long distant students who now can have access to what happens on this end of the world. The blog is consciously informal, because that’s the way the Department teachers are. Academics need not be an intense course in boring abstractions. We at the Department believe that language and learning can be fun and we are determined to have our share of it! And everyone’s invited to it too!
